Hostel Movie, A View To The Frightening Dark Side Of Human Ultimate Search For Excitation.

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

I had seen a poster referring to the latest, frightening movie around. It showed a drill entering the mouth of a poor guy sitting in some kind of torture chamber. Just by seeing the scene on the poster it looked really scary and hard to contemplate, would I dare to watch the movie?? The answer was “yes”. Lately, for some reason, I’ve been in the mood of watching scary, bloody, movies. Maybe it’s because lately Hollywood has been in the mood also, just count how many scary movies have been around for the last three years and you will realize they have been more than a few, they have been? a lot.

But coming back to Hostel movie; I decided to go and see how scary this “new scary” movie really was. The theater was not totally full, but there was much more people than I thought, somehow the movie trailers had attracted a good deal of audience. After a scene that seemed taken from a deep hell’s dungeon with a dirty man cleaning the gray floors of the tortures room, the beginning of the movie showed us a group of guys, two American students and a man from Island inside some kind of club in Amsterdam, doing what most tourists do in that famous European port. After a couple of scenes in those clubs, including the leaving behind of the sensual services of a gorgeous blond by one of the American guys, they arrive to their hostel only to realize the door is locked and they would have to wait outside until down to regain access to their room. But after an incident with the neighbors they find help and a roof for their heads that night thanks to the good manners of a strange guy that invites them to his room. Again the scenes of drugs and sex are present all around, I wonder if everything in Amsterdam is really sex and drugs, sincerely I doubt it.

This strange guy has a secret he wants to share with his new friends. If they want to spend a really good time with all the pleasure and excitation women can give they are in the wrong place, they should go East. There is a town in Eastern Europe where beautiful women abound and they are willing to spend their time and senses with you. Obviously he arises the curiosity of these young men and they eagerly ask for directions. He carelessly gives them the address of a very special hostel, the place where they will find all those amenities. Once morning arrives they are on the road, let’s better say, on the rails.

They travel by train as most Europeans do and everything goes fine except for an incident that introduces us to one of the main characters of the film. He is a business man that travels in the same cabin and that happens to be heading to the same location they are going. He is a man that seems to be in his sixties and he shows to the world with a peaceful appearance; though there is something that makes the audience doubt about his intentions. Specially after a shameful incident that forces him to leave the cabin.

Some time afterwards our three adventurous guys have arrived to their destination. It is a typical Eastern Europe small town full of charming old houses and brick streets. As they approach the address they were given by that strange guy back in Amsterdam the expectation of the fun ahead lets them have the best of moods. Now they are inside the Hostel, they are asked for their passports and then they are assigned to their room.

They find the first surprise of the trip once they have entered their room, they gladly realize they will be sharing the room with two beautiful ladies that seem to be perfectly alright standing nude in their presence. All seems to be according their expectations of the so highly recommended town. They spend the night at one of the clubs, go home with the ladies but suddenly, as an army of dark clouds in the sky, everything that seemed so perfect starts to reconfigure into the form of a nightmare.

Oli, the guy from Island, has disappeared without a trace after leaving with one woman they met at the club. Paxton and Josh prefer to think that he left without notice than thinking about something bad happening to him. They try to return to the good times at the club with their girlfriends but things go wrong again. Josh starts feeling sick and leaves the club. He barely makes it to the Hostel where they are waiting for him. Scene by scene we start to realize there something very wrong happening in that town. Specially when the head of Oli appears on screen has a scene coming from a hell dungeon.

Now is Josh’s turn, he will meet with his friend from the train again, Jan Vlasák. But now it won’t be at the club surrounded by pretty ladies. Now he will be his merciless torturer in one of the chambers of that horror land. The movie shows how Vlasák satisfies his instincts and frustrated vocation as a surgeon by cutting Josh’s body at will with the movements and calm of the most sadistic butcher.

Now there is only Paxton left; there was something in the drink he took and he has fallen asleep inside the restroom at the club saving his life for the moment. Everything is confusing, everyone has left; even their girlfriends are gone and no one knows about Josh. He goes to the police but they just take the case nominally, later we would learn they are also a slab in the horror chain of this salvage town.

Walking one of the streets Paxton passes by his ex-girlfriend that looks nothing like the nights before, she is changed and there are no more kisses. He asks her about his friends and after some thought she accedes to take him where they are. They take a taxi and follow a road that takes them to an old factory building that seems to be only ruins. But there is something more than ruins inside, the building is also a home of human misery.

There are men all around, some entering others leaving, always protected by escorts. It is a multimillionaire gathering for the most cruel of the games. Human hunting and torturing as a way of excitation and relax for the powerful. Paxton passes by the chambers where the most despicable acts are being performed; and suddenly he realizes he has fallen in the trap. They have paid $50 grand for him, the price of an American male ready to be hunted.

After losing three fingers and being tortured by a sinister short and bald man. Paxton manages to escape thanks to the inexperience of his torturer. But he would still need to evade all the guards surrounding the installation before he can be free?.there are still many horrors ahead for Paxton… I won’t tell you the end?you go and watch it your self?.

DVD Review: The Simpsons Movie

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Those yellow, animated phenomenons have finally made their way to the big screen and it only took eighteen years. So does the animated movie live up to the hilarity of the television show? Read on and find out ? doh!
The town of Springfield’s lake is overly polluted and socially conscious Lisa Simpson (Yeardley Smith) rallies the town to clean it up. Her dad Homer (Dan Castellaneta) saves a pig from being slaughtered after it’s used as a prop in a Krusty the Clown commercial and starts to treat it like the son he always wanted.

This doesn’t set well with Bart (Nancy Cartwright) who finds that Mr. Flanders (Harry Shearer) is a more caring father than his pig loving one. Homer’s new oinking child does what pig’s do and Homer puts the results in a huge silo in the backyard (well, Homer did put a little of himself into the job). His wife Marge (Julie Kavner) tells him to get rid of the silo of pig waste.

Homer does of course, by dumping it on Lake Springfield. This infusion of pollution causes the Environmental Protection Agency to become alerted to the situation. They react in their usual restrained manner ? the director Russ Cargill (Albert Brooks) orders that a huge glass dome cover the town.
The Simpsons eventually find themselves outside the dome and Homer decides to take off rather than help his neighbors (especially since they formed an angry mob against him when they found out that it was his silo that pushed the lake over the limit). He takes the family to Alaska and start over again, but the rest of the family thinks they should return and save Springfield.

The Simpsons have been a television hit since they started airing in 1989. There’s always been talk that creator Matt Groening should bring his jaundiced creations to the big screen. He’s seemingly been happy on the small screen but it has finally come to pass and the results are hilarious.
The film does play like a bigger and extended episode of the television show. It has some hilarious commentary on society as well as just outright wacky comedy. One bit of commentary has the church folk running to Moe’s bar and the bar patrons running to church as the giant dome of doom is placed over the town.

We also have an extended Bart dare as he skateboards in the buff down to the Krusty Burger. Not to mention the “Spider Pig” song that my kids would sing during the theatrical trailer.

Where this disc lets down a little is not in the content of the film but in the special feature department. It feels really rather light and you keep thinking that a more expansive special edition will be in the works somewhere down the line ? doh!.

The Simpsons is presented in anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) and is enhanced for 16×9 televisions. A fullscreen version is available separately. Special features include two commentary tracks.

The first one features writer/creator Matt Groening, writer/producer James L. Brooks, writer/producer Al Jean, writer/producer Mike Scully, director David Silverman, Yeardley Smith, and Dan Castellaneta, and the second one includes director Silverman, and sequence directors Mike B. Anderson, Steven Dean Moore and Rich Moore.

There are 5 minutes of deleted scenes introduced by Al Jean. The “Special Stuff” section has 3 minutes of Simpsons appearances on the Tonight Show, American Idol, and a parody of the “Let’s go to the Lobby” concession stand spiel. That’s it. Seems pretty light to me.

The movie is hilarious, but the extra features feel like a bit of a letdown as far as deleted scenes go, the commentaries are top notch. It’s well worth it for the film. I must knock it down a bit because it could’ve been a bigger set (and I suspect will be somewhere down the line).

Classical Movie – Why It Remains Relevant For Viewers Today

Friday, December 25th, 2009

So what really is considered a classical movie? Can we simply associate as a black and white film noir thing? Containing some of those cheesy classical music? How about big powdered wigs? Do you think of the formal nature of both the characters as well as the period get-up and attire? Is a classic movie one which garnered 10 Oscars? Or do you think a classic movie simply one which down to the perception of the viewers and individuals?

The classical movie IS truly one of the great inventions since we discovered hamburgers. The classical movie is also the one show that we had the benefit of watching when we were kids, cause at the time only three television channels were available. It was during those good old Saturday afternoons and Sundays, when my dear father wasnt consumed by the sports programmes on show, when those classic movies from the past, movies featuring the glamour girls and the guys that inspired us boys to want to be cowboys, were made available for us to enjoy in all their splendour.

Though there is obviously a distinct difference between classical movies and classical movies with only classical period elements (music, costumes, storylines, etc.), I would like to address the delight of the classical movie of yesterday and today that does involve only a particular period of history and does, then feature only classical period elements.

I tend to associate the black and white flicks with the beauties and the beaus, the comedies with the curmudgeons, the histories with the insights into who people were back then, like us but with an added je ne sais quoi that we must find out, learn about, and finally to appreciate in as great a depth and as wide a breadth as we can, in order to do them the justice they deserve.

Say for example, my favorite classical movie of all time, Impromptu. This film basically enacts a couple of years in the lives of the characters George Sand, Franz Liszt, Freiderich Chopin, and the regal and wealthy folks who took artists in, allowing them to paint, create, compose, write, in exchange for wonderful company and fine entertainment. The film concentrates on Sand, who is bent on partnering with Chopin, her aggression equal in magnitude, as was his weakness. The costumes, the soundtrack, the dialogue, and the setting are all as breathtaking as the direction, technique, and the delivery of words and emotion. There is even a theme or two that humans from the beginning of time until today can identify with or appreciatethe love and hate, good and evil, as well as longing and belonging motifs that are as timeless as the movie itself.

Other classical movie choices I have an affinity toward are those less mainstream & popular ones. I would consider Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (though clearly POST-classical periods), Wilde, and Jefferson, for instance, as worthy of classical movie acclaim as say Amadeus, Emma, The Piano, and any number of Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson productions.

Free Movies? Legal? You’ve Got To Be Kidding!

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Have you heard of the saying “you get what you pay for”? Have you also heard about all of the ruckus that went on over the sites that allowed people to share files for free? Well if so, or even if not, I don’t blame you for being incredulous when you hear me claim that I can tell you that there are sites that give you unlimited access to free movies, and completely legally. Well let me tell you how these sites work in the next several paragraphs.

Free movies is actually a creative marketing ploy, because there are actually fees involved. They can say that though because if you are a member of their site than you get access to all of their “free” movies. Basically what it boils down to is a site that operates very much like a cable company and charges a monthly fee to come be able to come to their site and download movies. They do get to keep them which is the super cool thing about these sites and makes them totally worth the cost.

So how do they make any money? Well they are on the internet so their market has huge potential. They are not limited by geography like a movie rental store would be or a cable company for that matter. So volume is a huge thing they bank on. So won’t people just get on the site for one month or so and download all of the movies that they want and then get out? Wouldn’t they lose money on people like this? Well the answer is yes and no. You see for one thing there is such a huge volume of films is would be hard to download all of the movies that you want in one month. Besides people don’t want their hard drives full of free movies. The other major thing is that good movies aren’t just going to all of a sudden stop coming out. People are going to want to stay members so that they can get the new releases that come out periodically.

Maybe now you are seeing the benefits that cause people to become members and then “give” them all the free movies that they could ever want. Maybe now you will go and check out one of these great sites. They are easy to find, trust me. All that you have to do is search for free movies and you will get more sites than you new existed for this new way to sell movies.

Watch The Fourth Kind – THE Most Disturbing Movie Ever Made!

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

You’ve seen the third kind…and coming this November you’ll have to brace yourself for the FOURTH kind. Fourth kind refers to a sliding scale of alien encounte,r as described by scientist J. Allen Hynek. A close encounter of the third kind is actually seeing an alien…the fourth kind is abduction. The Fourth Kind is called a “fact-based thriller”, which is enough to make you wonder.

And for a small town in Alaska, there’s a lot of the fourth kind going around lately. Over the last forty years, a lot of unexplained disappearances have happened and the locals are starting to blame the feds. But what’s really behind it? Check out the trailer.

There’s actually a close encounter of the FIFTH kind, involving human-initiated alien contact, so if there’s going to be a sequel to The Fourth Kind, chances are it’ll be fifth. But will this one rate a sequel? Head on down to the comments section to weigh in. Thanks for watching!

The Fourth Kind Cast: Milla Jovovich, Corey Johnson, Alisha Seaton, Daphne Alexander

Hot Rod | Stuntman Forever

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

If there’s one thing we can rely on every summer, it’s the release of some fun movies. A great example is the zany offering Hot Rod. This film builds on the premise that Rod Kimble’s step-father (Frank) is a bully and Rod needs to take him down a notch or two. The problem we soon see is that Daddy Dearest has major health problems. Rod plans to raise money to save Frank by performing a never-before-completed stunt jump.

In the meantime we learn that Frank has a biological son named Kevin Powell, who turns out to be a supportive step-brother for Rod. To learn more about how Rod trains for his mission and to donate money for Frank, be sure to visit Kevin’s site.

This Paramount Pictures, Michaels/Goldwyn Production Hot Rod will come to theaters on August 3, 2007. Many familiar names compose the cast as well as some on their way to sure stardom. They include Andy Samberg of Saturday Night Live (SNL) fame; Isla Fisher noted for her role as the sex-crazed sister in the equally zany “Wedding Crashers”; Ian Mc Shane television and film star (Deadwood (for which he won a Golden Globe, Lovejoy, and “Sexy Beast” among a multitude of others; and Sissy Spacek, another award winner who’s career spans over 35 years. You may remember her from “Carrie” or “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. Pam Brady (“South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut) wrote the hilarious script, and Akiva Shaffer directed. He currently writes for SNL as well directs their Digital Shorts and music videos. This film is not yet rated.

You’ll find short videos, photos, and more information on “Hot Rod” as well as “Stuntman Forever” on My Space as well as their individual websites.

Movie Plot
Rod Kimble fancies himself a talented stuntman and spends hours perfecting his art. In the meantime Frank, his step-dad can’t seem to harass him enough. During their sparring sessions Frank throws Rod around, humiliating him at every turn. When Frank becomes so ill he needs major surgery, it’s a mixed blessing for Rod. He gets the chance to showcase his biggest stunt ever and if he pulls it off he’ll not only become famous, he’ll also be able to pound the daylights out of Frank. If he fails he faces the ultimate debasement because if Frank lives he’ll have the last laugh and Rod’s audience will quickly disappear.

Rod idolizes the now aging and retired Evel Knievel, who ultimately jumped over 13 double-decker and 14 Greyhound buses while perched on his motorcycle. Rod sets a goal of soaring over a total of 15 buses. With the money raised from ticket sales he’ll become famous and be able to pay for Frank’s operation.

Andy Samberg
Whether or not you’ve seen Andy on SNL, you’ll fall in love with this loveable goofball. His and Chris Parnell’s hysterically funny short video “Lazy Sunday: Chronicles of Narnia”, released in December 2005, broke viewing records for My Space and NBC. He and all the talent in and behind the scenes of “Hot Rod” and “Stuntman Forever” provide some rollicking good fun that you’ll want to see over and over.

Downloading Online Movies

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

There are many online websites for downloading movies, though the legality issue was still a major question mark until recently, especially since sites downloading music like Napster were shut down.  The big news for many computer junkies recently was that  the companies of  Movielink and CinemaNow are recognized as being the first major online sources for legal downloadable movies in the United States.  Previously the studios were shy about licensing online stores for anything but video rental, but now that has changed.

Movielink has managed this breakthrough by pushing forward with the backing of Universal, Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount, Sony Pictures, and Warner Brothers. Cinema Now is in a similar situation, which is part of the reason why these companies are experimenting to see how the downloads process works.  Movie downloads for new releases become available on the same day as the DVD release, and there is an ever growing backlist of previously made films all ready.  The one thing to keep in mind that makes these downloads different than others: you can not burn anything onto DVD, the download will only stay on your computer and can not be copied.

Pricing, according to studios, is currently “competitive” with the DVD release, which in many people’s minds makes it a bad buy, being way too expensive for what you get.  Classic movies are generally be priced at $13.99, with some movies priced as low as $9.99.  New movies are all over the map.  King Kong, for instance, will sell for $19.99, compared to $14.96 + shipping from retailers like Amazon.  The Bad News Bears (2005), on the other hand, sells for $26.00 online at Movielink, which is essentially the same price Amazon is carrying at the moment.  Most of these offerings, however, will not offer the extras found on today’s DVD and you instantly sacrifice the ability to take your movies with you on the go.

Encrypted or not, the standard DVD is at least portable.  All in all, this makes movie downloads from these sites, even with the reassurance of everything being acceptable and “legal” as really weak..  Until a better pricing appears, it would seem that these companies are doomed to failure.  At least they would be, if the movie companies did not own them.  Wait for a better deal.
